Red tape over common sense: Local business community outraged after ‘mad’ court summons

The local business community is rallying around five popular and prominent local business men tonight after it emerged that Planning Service allegedly served the Hill Street quintet with summons to appear in court on the 19th March 2013.

The status update on Cahill Brothers Facebook page has went viral just hours after going live

It is believed the court summons is regarding a banner placed on Hill Street by local traders – which said ‘Welcome back to Hill Street’ – to welcome customers back on to Hill Street and Monaghan Street after some major disruption following the Public Realm Scheme last year.

The Public Realm Scheme, designed to improve the area, involved installing new kerbing, paving, street furniture and tree planting, as well as new decorative street lighting.

Throughout the public realm scheme, believed to have cost around £1.8m, there was widespread disruption caused in the area, with long traffic jams and closed roads a frequent sight.

Local businesses were angered at the disruption, with many claiming to fall victim to a dramatic decline in sales and footfall.

The news has already went viral after an outraged Cahill Brothers posted on their Facebook page, “HELP, HELP, HELP. Declan McChesney, Jack Murphy, Gerard Rice, Mick and David Downey were today served with summons to appear in court on 19th of March.

The post continued, “The crime, Planning Service wish to take us to court for having a banner welcoming people back to Hill Street following the huge disruption last year during works on Monaghan and Hill Street.

The post encouraged local Facebook users to spread the word and added, “Like if you think this is mad and please share!”

Almost immediately after going live on their Facebook page, the Cahill Brother’s status update sparked anger and outrage from many in the local community, some of whom labelled the alleged decision by Planning Service as ‘ridiculous’, ‘outrageous’ and a ‘disgrace’.

Just two hours after going live the post had already been shared over 190 times, making it accessible to potentially over 100,000 people.

Additionally, a new Facebook Page – Support For Newry Traders – has been created, with local business men and women and members of the community showing solidarity with the popular business men.
