‘Council must also Shop Local’ – McGinn

Sinn Fein Councillor Pat McGinn, speaking during Newry Council’s Monday night meeting said that it was essential that Newry & Mourne District Council lead by example in relation to the recently introduced “Shop Local” campaign.

The meeting took place in the Council office

Commenting on concerns raised about the Council’s Cycle to Work scheme, the Councillor stated, “It is essential that this Council embeds the mantra of “First Stop, Shop Local” in all its practices and in the procurement of services.

“I want the Clerk of the council to provide assurances that this principle will be rigorously applied by all officers and departments.”

Acknowledging that the decision to adapt the most recent Cycle to Work Scheme was taken in August 2012 at the Environmental Health Committee meeting, the Councillor said that there was a need to review the decision and to discuss avenues open to ensure that all local businesses felt that they have the opportunity for an input into the service where Council Staff can purchase cycles.

Members of Newry & Mourne Council agreed to Councillor McGinn’s proposal to meet to discuss the issue in detail.
