Brady ‘concerned’ ahead of contentious three day Newry parade
Newry Armagh MLA Mickey Brady will meet the Parades Commission tomorrow, Tuesday 14th August to discuss concerns regarding parades which will take place over three consecutive days in Newry.
Speaking to Newry Times, Mr Brady said,
“These parades will take place on 24th, 25th and 26th August which is Friday evening, all day Saturday and most of Sunday afternoon on a bank holiday weekend. I have grave concerns regarding some of the proposed routes these parades will take as well as the numbers of bands participating and the anticipated numbers of spectators.”
“Newry’s retail and service businesses come alive at the weekends and bank holiday weekends are particularly important trading events for these sectors. We must do all we can to try to ensure that these parades by South Down Defenders and Newry Royal Black District Chapter 4 do not negatively impact on local businesses or those living along the routes.”
Brady added, “I will be raising these concerns tomorrow with the Parades Commission and I will again be seeking to meet with both the South Down Defenders and the Royal Black DC 4 to put the concerns of local people directly to the organisers of the parades. I only hope that this time they will agree to speak with me.”
