Parts of city still closed as security alert continues

Police in Newry are still dealing with a security alert following the report of a suspicious vehicle on the Fathom Line/Drumalane Road area of the city late last night. The Fathom Line is still closed at the junction with Drumalane Road and the border. The security alert started after a member of the public contacted police about a suspicious small white van parked at the side of the road.

Speaking to Newry Times, a spokesman for the PSNI said, “Police in Newry continue to attend a security alert in the Fathom Line area following the report of a suspicious vehicle in the area. Fathom Line remains closed between Drumalane Road and the border. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes for their journey.”

SDLP MLA Dominic Bradley said police had told him that a vehicle had been abandoned with its engine running. Bradley said police were taking the alert very seriously and had advised local people to remain indoors while checks were carried out. “They have said that the operation may take quite a length of time so the indications are that police may believe that there is a viable device in this vehicle.”
