Question Time event in Newry to mark European Local Democracy Week
SDLP Newry Councillor Gary Stokes has welcomed the news that a Question Time event for local youth councils will take place in the Downshire Civic Centre on Wednesday 12th October to mark European Local Democracy Week 2016.
Speaking to Newry Times, Stokes said, “Events like this are great for engaging today’s youth in local politics.
The theme of the event is ‘Living together in culturally diverse societies; respect, dialogue, interaction.’
“It will encourage young people to voice their opinions on issues of interest to them and to raise the profile of local democracy, and the role of the Council and our Councillors” said Cllr Stokes.
“The young people involved will take up the councillors seats in the chamber and have the opportunity to question a panel of Newry, Mourne & Down Councillors, a senior council officer relevant to the topic of Brexit and an external spokeperson on culturally diverse societies and refugees.

He added, “All the political parties will be represented on the panel and the event will be facilitated by an external person. We hope the event is a success and we look to build on it to deliver a more extensive programme for Local Democracy Week 2017.”
