Three pipe bombs and ammunition found after Newry security operation
A major police operation in the Parkhead Crescent area of Newry has ended after police discovered three pipe bombs and ammunition.
Local police accompanied by army bomb disposal experts were at the scene, which is just yards from the busy Camlough Road, from early this morning.
Today’s security operation comes just 12 hours after a pipe bomb attack in Newry yesterday evening which caused damage to a house and several cars in the Patrician Park housing estate on the Chancellors Road.
Speaking to Newry Times, a spokesman for Newry PSNI stated, “The searches in the area of Parkhead Crescent, Newry have now concluded.
“ATO discovered three pipe bomb type devices which have been taken away for further forensic examination. A quantity of ammuniton was also recovered. Investigations into this incident are ongoing.
Chief Inspector Davy Beck, Area Commander commented, “I am happy that these potential pipe bomb type devices and ammunition have been taken off the streets of Northern Ireland.
“The public can rest assured that we will continue to serve the community of Newry and I would ask anyone who has any information about these items or who saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area of the Parkhead Crescent to contact Police on 0845 600 8000.
He added, “Or, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
