A suspected pipe bomb has exploded in Newry this evening causing damage to a house and several cars.

The explosion is reported to have happened at around 8:30pm in Patrician Park, just yards from the Dublin Road.

Police are currently at the scene and have cordoned off the area. There are no reports of any injuries.

The PSNI Newry & Mourne Facebook stated, “No one was injured but damage was caused to some property. Anyone with information should contact Police at Newry on 0845 600 8000 or via independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111..

SDLP MLA for Newry and Armagh, Dominic Bradley condemned those behind what he described as a ‘senseless pipe bomb attack on a local home’.

He told Newry Times, “I was distressed to hear that two pipe bombs were thrown at a house in Patrician Park in Newry tonight. This house is in a quiet residential area and this was a senseless attack for which there is absolutely no justification. It could easily have caused injury or death.

“Those behind this attack are enemies of our community and anyone with any information should contact the police immediately,” he added.
