Starting at St Colman’s College, Newry, this 6km family walk has become a very special event for both the local community and the Hospice.

On the night, there will be poignant music from the Choir Studio and warming refreshments, provided each year by Courtneys.

Those attending will also receive a memory bib to wear, which they can personalise with the name of the person they are walking in memory of.

Participants can also add a message to the memory wall, this poignant reminder of all those remembered on the night is one of the highlights of the evening.

The Midnight Memory Walk is a very special event, where local families come together to walk in memory of their loved ones.

Among them is the Morgan family from Kilcoo, whose husband and father, Gene, passed away in Hospice care last year.

This year, the family has been generously fundraising to ensure others can receive the same compassionate care that Gene did.

Reflecting on Gene’s time in Hospice, Aine shares, “We lost Gene last November after a short battle with cancer.

“Gene always lit up the room and was loved by so many. Although our hearts are shattered, we are eternally grateful for the care Gene received during his time in Southern Area Hospice.

“Gene spent a week in Hospice, receiving exceptional care and symptom control.

“Every member of staff went above and beyond to make him comfortable and looked after him with compassion.

“We are coming together to walk in memory of Gene and to raise awareness for this incredible Hospice that provides such vital support.

“Any support would be greatly appreciated to enable others to receive the level of care Gene did,” Aine adds.

This year, the Hospice needs to raise an incredible £3.6 million to continue with its specialist care services.

The money raised from last year’s event helped to provide over 47 hours of Hospice care to local people, just like Gene and his family.

You can register on the Hospice’s website at www.southernareahospiceservices.org, or by messaging the Hospice’s Facebook page.
