It comes after the Newry City representative wrote to Translink Chief Executive, Chris Conway expressing her deep concerns about the cut of the long-standing free-of-charge Bus Service from Newry Bus Station to Newry Train Station.

“I recently wrote to Translink after it had come to my attention following engagement with a constituent that there is no shuttle bus link between the last train that arrives in Newry station and the bus station,” Councillor Finn explains.

“The lady in question had raised concerns around safety, particularly in light of the fact that if women are travelling alone that the station may be closed as they wait for a taxi.

“Along with this, there are concerns around the impact that this will have on tourists in the area, particularly for those who are travelling into our city and hoping to avail of public transport as part of their journey.”

Presently, a connecting bus is in operation between Newry train station and Newry Bus Centre for all cross-border train services prior to 19:20 Monday to Friday; 19:10 on Saturdays and 17:25 on Sundays.

“I welcome engagement from Translink’s Chief Executive and the Director of Operations that they have committed to working towards a permanent suitable and safe solution and they assure me they have already begun investigations into this matter.”

She adds, “The SDLP has always been committed to sustaining and improving public transport links throughout Newry and across the Island and will continue to defend access to public services for all.”
