Local population stands at just over 1.9 million | News in Newry
The Northern Ireland population on 30 June 2022 was 1.911 million.
This is an annual increase of 6,000 people (0.3 per cent) on the 2021 estimate.
This is one of the findings of new statistics published this month by the Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA).
This annual change is driven by natural growth of 3,800 people (21,500 births and 17,700 deaths) combined with a gain of 2,300 people over the year due to net migration (27,000 people moving here to live and 24,700 people leaving here to live elsewhere).
The population continues to age with the number of older people (aged 65 or over) increasing over the year by 1.9 percent (to 335,400 people).
Within this group, the population aged 85 and over increased by 2.1 percent (to 41,100 people).
The number of children (aged under 16) remained stable at 389,400.
The population in only one Local Government District decreased over the year to mid-2022, with a decline of -0.2 percent in Causeway Coast and Glens.
Belfast experienced the largest population growth over the year (0.9 percent).
Local population and migration estimates are produced by the Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA).
The latest statistics detail the number of people resident in Northern Ireland on 30 June 2022 and are referred to as the mid‑year estimates.
The statistics do not take account of any change since 30 June 2022.
