McKernan calls for Strategy to Upgrade Rural Estates | News in Newry
SDLP Representative for Cusher Emmajayne McKernan has called for an urgent strategy to improve rural estates.
Mrs McKernan has visited a number of rural estates, including Bunkerhill in Markethill, Caramoyle on the outskirts of Keady and Mourneview Park in Clady and has seen a common problem of lack of investment and maintenance in shared spaces.
Mrs McKernan says, “Rural Estates once developed by the Housing Executive are now mixed ownership, with some houses being bought by tenants.
“This gradual change down through the years has unfortunately led to little to no investment in shared spaces within estates, including footpaths.
“This is simply not good enough.
“I have seen paving that was put down 40 years ago, cracked and uneven across all the estates.
“I’ve seen overgrown green areas and moss-ridden passages.
“Many of these shared walkways are dangerous and unsightly.
“I am calling for an urgent strategy to tackle this problem and for investment to help improve these rural estates for all residents.
“It is essential that footpaths are safe and accessible for all to use, including those with mobility issues.”
