The most recent data for students registered with The Open University (the OU) in the Newry and Armagh constituency is 170.

And with the value of the courses ranging from £450 each through to £3,140, that’s potentially hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of free courses for people in the area.

The total value of the fund which launched this week is £23 million, with £1.8m being earmarked for OU places.

The initiative, which runs for two years will target up-skilling and re-skilling opportunities across a variety of priority economic areas.

The deadline for enrolment for courses with the OU is Friday 1 October 2021, with courses going live from November across a diverse range of areas from teaching and cyber security to entrepreneurship.

The OU offers a flexible way to learn and is very experienced in supporting people returning to education.

John D’Arcy Director of The Open University in Ireland said, “Now is the perfect time for people to enhance their skills to gain a competitive advantage in the workplace – especially with talent shortages in certain industries or if you’re considering a change of career.

“As the only University dedicated to online learning, we have courses available to choose from in key training areas such as business management, computing and supply chain which can be studied in a flexible way to work around the demands of life.

“The Open University in Northern Ireland is ranked the top University for overall student satisfaction and has been for the last 17 years and we are proud to have produced more CEOs and MDs than any other UK institute.”

He added, “We look forward to working with more people here to support their career ambitions.”
