The local Councillor said, “Local Roads Service Officers have confirmed that subject to their section office budget allocation they hope to resurface the entire stretch of the Windmill Road in July/August 2021 in line with school closures to ensure minimum disruption to residents and to allow efficient completion.

“This is welcome news and I commend local residents for their determination to see that the unacceptable condition of the road surface was addressed.

“I have been working on behalf of the residents, lobbying and holding site meetings with the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) for a number of years ensuring this issue has been on the table at all times for funding.

“I will continue to lobby DFI on behalf of all residents over the coming months to ensure the Department completes this initiative.”

The Newry City Councillor continued, “I have also raised yet again the issue of the state of the roads on High Street and Arthur Street in the city and will continue to liaise and lobby DFI to ensure these essential road surface works are considered for funding and remain for funding and carried out as soon as possible.

“Roads across our district are in an appalling state and just patching them up in many cases should not be an option as most see it as a waste of money and time.

“A fully resourced resurfacing programme needs to be developed.

The Sinn Féin representative added, “I urge the Department of Infrastructure (DfI) who last year had their largest budget to date, to ensure that Newry Mourne and Down receives the same support as other districts throughout the North over the next financial year.”

  1. I’m very glad to here this. Newry roads are in terrible condition, why do we pay road tax if the roads aren’t getting fixed, the mechanics are making a furtune, not only or we pay road tax were paying to get cars fixed because the council aren’t doing their job. Weres the money going because it’s surely not on or roads. People need to speak up more.

Entire town is a joke. Old Warrenpoint Road near Commons Way is like an obstacle course. As is Catherine Street
The amount of times my car has flagged up with issues after being unable to avoid pot holes. Or craters would be a better word for them actually. Whole town has been destroyed by botched jobs of patching and laying down gas lines and Virgin Media!!
