Opportunities for young people in Newry with Tesco and The Prince’s Trust

The Prince’s Trust and Tesco Get into Retail programme returns to Newry this autumn, offering work experience and training opportunities to young people aged 16 – 30.

Get into Retail is a training and mentoring scheme that gives young people aged 16-30, not currently in full-time employment, education or training, the skills, experience and confidence they need to find a job.

During the programme, participants complete on the job training in a Tesco store and receive regular feedback and guidance from a dedicated buddy.

There are two opportunities to get involved in the Get into Retail programme, the first starts with an online taster day on 13 October 2020.

The programme then runs from 19 October to 6 November.

The second taster day is 3 November 2020, with the three-week programme running from 9 to 27 November.

There is also a Ready to Work programme for people who already have some work experience.

It is a two-day programme that will give an insight into working in Tesco and on the second day participants will take part in an interview.

There is an online taster day on 23 September and the programme takes place on 1 and 2 October.

Placements are available in stores across Northern Ireland.

Hassan Alkhawam, aged 23, moved to Northern Ireland from Syria nearly three years ago.

He was looking for work when a friend told him about The Prince’s Trust Get into Retail programme with Tesco.

After completing the programme he was offered a job in the Portadown store and has been working there for six months.

“I found the programme really interesting,” he commented.

“I think it is a great opportunity.

“Everyone was amazing and I was delighted to be offered a job in Tesco at the end of it.

“I’ve been working there for six months now, right through the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The stores have been busy, but it feels good to be helping during this difficult time,” he maintains.

“It is great to be earning money and living independently.

“I’ve made lots of new friends and I have also recently been accepted to study Software Engineering at Queen’s.

“I’m so proud to work for Tesco and would recommend the Get into Retail course to anyone,” he adds.
