There is widespread anger in Newry after vandals damaged graves in the city.
Newry City Sinn Féin Councillor Valerie Harte said that those involved in the incidents at Monkshill Cemetery in the City had caused huge distress to the families, relatives and friends of those plots they had attacked.
Speaking to Newry Times, the local Councillor said, “The desecration of a grave is very distressing for any family.
“Those involved in this attack must be unreservedly condemned.
“Many grieving families find great comfort in visiting cemeteries; they are places of peace and reflection.”
Councillor Harte continued, “Those responsible for these attacks need to be ashamed of themselves.”
The Councillor appealed for anyone with information that could identify the culprits to contact the PSNI.
“To damage any grave is appalling and we expect that the police will conduct a thorough investigation in a bid to bring those responsible before the courts.
