Speaking to Newry Times, Councillor Byrne said, “I am delighted that Professor Siobhan O’Neill has agreed to act as an interim Mental Health Champion, until a permanent appointee in April 2021.

“Professor O’Neill is an expert at the very top of her field and known across these islands for her pioneering and passionate work on suicide prevention.

“As a public representative I’ve had many people approach me seeking advice, parents in particular and it can be a paralysing experience when you don’t have all the answers.

“We have a duty to provide properly for those in despair.

“Professor O’Neill, with her close links to the voluntary and community sector, will work closely across Government departments and work with those with lived experiences to influence policy and practice.

The local Councillor added, “This will be crucial in tackling the mental health issues we face as a society.”
