Coronavirus Northern Ireland: Retail NI welcomes progress on relaxing delivery driver hours
After making representation to the Infrastructure Minister on relaxing delivery drivers’ hours, Retail NI has welcomed Nicola Mallon’s decision to allow a temporary relaxation in exceptional circumstances to ensure increased delivery to shops, following the steep rise in demand due to Covid-19.
Retail NI Chief Executive Glyn Roberts said, “Retail NI welcomes the prompt action of Minister Mallon, following our representation to the Department for Infrastructure on behalf of our members.
“This would be a temporary relaxation of drivers’ hours to ensure that our members’ stores can restock faster to keep up with the exceptional demand from consumers due to Covid-19.
He continued, “We fully appreciate that this will be a difficult and challenging time for delivery drivers and hope that it will only be for a short duration of this emergency.
“We repeat our message again to the general public: Shop responsibly. Do not panic buy and stockpile as you will leave other people without essential items.
“Retail NI also asks that you think about the most vulnerable in our society and suggests that shoppers donate goods to food banks.
“Please also spare a thought for our retail staff who are working incredibly hard to serve you, our customers, during these unprecedented times.
“Together we will get through this crisis,” Glyn added.
