Second man charged after Newry assault on Down GAA player

Detectives investigating an assault on two men in the Merchant’s Quay area of Newry in the early hours of Monday morning, 30 December, have charged a second man in connection with the assault on Down GAA footballer Caolan Mooney, 26, and his brother Patrick, 32.

Caolan Mooney shared this image on his personal Twitter account last night from his hospital bed, thanking everyone for their good wishes.

 

The 35-year-old man has been charged with affray and grievous bodily harm.

He was also charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

 

 

He is due to appear at Newry Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 22 January.

As is normal procedure all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.

 

 

It comes after Detectives charged a 37-year-old man with Affray and attempted grievous bodily harm with intent.

He appeared at Armagh Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 31 December.

 

 

Detectives are appealing to anyone who witnessed the assault which we believed occurred shortly before 2.30 am to contact detectives at Ardmore on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference 177 31/12/19.
