Call for information after serious car accidents

SDLP Slieve Gullion Councillor Pete Byrne has called for information on two car incidents in the Crossmaglen area over the last two weeks.

Speaking to Newry Times, Byrne said, “On the evening of Friday 12 April, a vehicle was involved in a hit and run incident in Crossmaglen Square.

“Eye witnesses noticed that those who fled the scene had concealed their identities.

“This incident has caused considerable distress and anxiety to those involved and I have been inundated with messages from people from the wider community in Crossmaglen calling out this disgraceful behaviour.

He continued, “The following day on Saturday 13 April, a car was found burnt out on Murrays Road outside Creggan.

“This was raised by another Councillor in the media on the same weekend, however, it is believed that the remains of the car were removed from the scene on the early hours of Sunday morning.

“No one has the right to take the law into their own hands by removing a vehicle from the scene of a crime.

“I’m calling on anyone with information about either incident to come forward to myself or the PSNI.

“If we have learned anything from the events of the last week is that people are united against these kinds of acts. You are not wanted in this community and we will continue to face you down,” Councillor Byrne added.
