Newry City Councillor Valerie Harte has praised the vigilance of residents living in Ardmaine Gardens in the Fullerton Road area after a man was apprehended inside the shed of a residence.

The local Councillor said, “I must commend the prompt actions of neighbours of a resident in Ardmaine Gardens who apprehended a person who had entered the property.

“He had been noticed acting suspiciously in the area. The man was detained and police arrested him when they were called to the scene.”

The Sinn Féin representative continued, “I am of no doubt that community vigilance stopped what may have been a robbery and potentially traumatic experience for the homeowner and their family.

“Those engaged in these criminal actions need to face the full rigours of the law.”

Councillor Harte added, “I would urge people to make sure their homes and properties are well secured.

“This is the second reported incident in this area within the past few days.

“I would also ask all to be vigilant to suspicious activity and report any such behaviour immediately to the Police.”
