Newry Council approves £2.5 million Play Strategy projects

Newry Mourne and Down Councillor Liz Kimmins has said the decision by the Council’s Active & Healthy Communities Committee to approve a large number of capital schemes projects will help improve the quality of life of all who will benefit from the projects.

The local representative explained, “The Active & Healthy Communities Committee, as a result of our Play Strategy, have just approved a large number of capital scheme projects to be tendered and delivered by 2019, for the combined total of just over £2.5m.

“This includes the much-needed upgrade of the playparks in Meigh, Carrivemaclone and Cloughogue which I have been lobbying for over the past number of years.”

She continued, “Playboard NI will be carrying out community consultation on behalf of our Council over the coming weeks and months in each of the areas and it is important that people living in these areas contribute to this.

“Consultation will take place in a number of ways to ensure the broadest range of feedback is received.”

The Sinn Féin Councillor added, “Rural areas, in particular, seem to be lacking modern fit for purpose outdoor play facilities for children and young people.

“This is an issue that has to be addressed by Newry, Mourne & Down Council.”
