Warrenpoint Port thanks community for sharing views on dredging proposal

Warrenpoint Port has thanked the community for taking part in a community engagement session into new proposals for how dredged material from the Port is dealt with.

A summary of queries, which were submitted by members of the public and other stakeholders, and responses to them, has now been made available on the Port’s website.

The Port carries out dredging to ensure sufficient water depth is maintained to allow the safe navigation and berthing of vessels and is exploring the feasibility of a new placement site in the mouth of Carlingford Lough between Cranfield Point and Greencastle for material from its minor dredging campaigns.

Clare Guinness, CEO, Warrenpoint Port, commented, “We were delighted to welcome the views from members of our community on proposals for a new placement site for dredged material.

“We wish to thank all those who took part and put forward a wide range of questions, both at our open public event and subsequently through our consultants Royal HaskoningDHV.

“As conservators of the lough environment, we take all views very seriously. These views, along with the results of the site characterisation study will be taken on board to help inform a decision as to whether to proceed with an application for a marine licence.

“We now move into a period during which a number of surveys and assessments will be carried out to determine the suitability of the location identified.

She added, “Once the studies are complete, the results will be made publicly available and will be subject to further public engagement.”

A report on questions received and answers provide by the Port is available at www.warrenpointport.com/in-lough-placement/
