Two convicted at Newry Magistrates’ Court of benefit fraud

A man and a woman were convicted at Newry Magistrates’ Court this week for claiming benefits they were not entitled to.

Michael Murphy (64) of Iveagh Terrace, Newtownhamilton, claimed Income Support totalling £3,316 while failing to declare a Pension.

He was fined £200 and also given a £15 offender levy.

 

 

Mairead Smith (43) of Rathview Park, Crossmaglen, claimed Income Support totalling £4,177 while failing to declare employment.

 

 

She was fined £200 and also given a £15 offender levy.

They are also required to repay any outstanding money wrongfully obtained to the Department for Communities.

 

 

Suspected benefit fraud can be reported to the Department for Communities anonymously.
