Newry sportsman earns Great Game Fairs award

Newry country sportsman Declan Boyle has earned honours from The Great Game Fairs of Ireland, recognised for his longstanding contribution to the training and breeding of internationally acclaimed gundogs.

Declan, who is the Honorary Field Trial Secretary of the Labrador Retriever Club and a panel judge in the Irish Kennel Club, has recently celebrated winning the Irish Retriever Championships with his superb dog, FTCH Miller McDuff … affectionately known at home as ‘Paddy’.

This month his passion, love of dogs and skills in training them were recognised with the presentation of one of prestigious Country Sport & Country Life Awards, made annually in recognition of outstanding contributions to country sports and heritage.

Presenting the award, Albert Titterington, Director of The Great Game Fairs of Ireland, said, “In some ways, this award should go to Paddy, since it is the dog who does the work in Field Trials … or so Declan always insists!

“However those of us who watch with admiration as his dogs perform in the field or in competition understand just how much hard work and skill lies behind those prize-winning runs. Declan forges close bonds with all his dogs and knows how to draw the very best out of them. Their enthusiasm and energy are boundless!

He continued, “Declan also brings great skill to his relationships with fellow sportsmen and he is a superb Team Captain, encouraging and supporting others and always modest about his own achievements.

“In this, our ruby anniversary year, we are delighted to recognise Declan’s consistent successes with the presentation of this Great Game Fairs of Ireland Award.

“As the Fair toasts its first forty years, we add a good luck wish as Declan prepares to captain a particularly talented team running some fantastic dogs at competition in the coming season,” Albert added.
