‘DUP and Tory agenda jeopardising economic stability’ – Murphy

Economic stability in the North is being jeopardised by the actions of the DUP and the Tory Party, Sinn Féin MLA Conor Murphy has said.

The Newry and Armagh MLA was commenting after a number of business groups wrote to the British Secretary of State calling for civil servants to be given more powers in the absence of the power-sharing institutions.

“We share the concerns of local business and industry here, all of whom we have been actively engaging with on these critical issues,” Murphy told Newry Times.

“We need functioning Government and an Executive which can command public confidence and get on with delivering public services, investment, trade and jobs.

“As a party, we are fully committed to power-sharing and are determined to find a sustainable way forward which restores the political institutions and power-sharing government.

He continued, “For over a year Sinn Féin was engaged in political talks with the DUP and the two governments to seek an agreement. The leadership of both parties reached a fair and balanced accommodation – a draft agreement, however, the DUP leadership were unwilling to deliver on this, unilaterally withdrawing from the talks and collapsing the process.

“Sinn Féin has made clear that the issues which require remedy are not going away,” the local MLA insisted.

“In the immediate term the onus is now on the two governments to act and through joint stewardship establish the British-Irish Intergovernmental Conference as provided for in the Good Friday Agreement and redress the issues which prevent the restoration of effective power-sharing institutions which command public trust and confidence.

“Sinn Féin has made clear that in the absence of the Assembly and Executive the choice is between the protection of the Good Friday Agreement or its abandonment. A return to direct rule would represent its abandonment.

“The DUP and the Tories are putting party self-interest before the economic interests of people here. Their Brexit agenda is jeopardising economic stability. The DUP do not speak for the majority of people and Sinn Féin alongside the other parties has made clear that we cannot withstand exclusion from the single market or customs union.

“We have also made clear our commitment to the protection of the Good Friday Agreement in all of its parts, including North/South and East/West co-operation which is critical to maintaining relationships within, and between these islands. Our priority is to safeguard our political and economic stability now and for the future.

He added, “We will continue to work with the business community, sectoral organisations, local communities, other parties and both Governments to re-establish power-sharing Government for everyone in the time ahead.”
