Sinn Fein welcomes Fawcett Sex Discrimination Law review report

Sinn Féin MLA Megan Fearon has welcomed the Fawcett Sex Discrimination Law Review and called for the introduction of an Equality Act.

The party’s Equality spokesperson told Newry Times, “The Good Friday Agreement envisaged an equality architecture that was state-of-the-art.

“However, the Fawcett report confirms that equality law here is now falling behind.

“Sinn Fein is, therefore, calling for an Equality Act to ensure our equality protections are fully up-to-date and comprehensive.

“The report also highlights that Brexit would disadvantage women as we depend on EU Equality directives for the promotion, protection and fulfilment of equality and non-discrimination.

“We agree with the report’s conclusion that more must be done to further Equality and Human rights for women in the north of Ireland including the introduction of an Equality Act and strengthening existing non-discrimination laws,” she added.
