Park and Ride and extra parking spaces explored for Daisy Hill Hospital

The Southern Health and Social Care Trust has highlighted its continued commitment to improving car parking and traffic flow around its busy hospital sites this year.

Following a survey of service users and staff, a number of measures were introduced last year to help improve the experience for those who use and work in Daisy Hill, Craigavon, Lurgan and South Tyrone Hospitals.

These included the introduction of parking enforcement at Daisy Hill and Craigavon to protect drop off zones, red hatched areas, emergency routes, ambulance bays and disabled spaces.

Renewed markings on disabled spaces to ensure they are visible and car parking resurfacing at Lurgan Hospital and the creation of additional spaces were also introduced.

Traffic calming measures including ramps at pedestrian crossings and speed control signage were introduced at Craigavon Area Hospital as well as additional spaces at Craigavon Area Hospital.

A number of new traffic management measures identified for this year include an additional 35 spaces on the Daisy Hill site as well as exploring park and ride initiatives for the Daisy Hill site.

Also identified for this year is improved wayfinding signage for vehicles and pedestrians on all sites and improvements to footpaths and barriers at Craigavon Area Hospital.

Speaking to Newry Times, Vivienne Toal, Director of Human Resources and Organisational Development for the Southern Trust said, “Traffic management is a continued priority, particularly around our very busy hospital sites.

“Over the past year we have put great effort into developing our traffic management strategy and have seen very notable improvements in the accessibility of parking and congestion has significantly eased.

“The introduction of parking enforcement has greatly increased the availability of disabled spaces for those who genuinely need them and is ensuring that red marked routes are kept clear for emergency vehicles.

She added, “We look forward to progressing a number of new developments this year and will continue to explore and identify priority areas to improve safety and access for everyone using our services right across all of our sites.”
