The community is in ‘deep shock’ today after the death of a 12 year old girl in Newry.

The youngster died after a collision between a beach buggy and a black Toyota Hilux pick-up truck on the Flagstaff Road in Newry on Saturday afternoon.

Police said the 12 year old was a passenger in the buggy, which was driven by a 14 year old girl.

The 14 year old sustained a broken leg and remains in hospital.

It is believe the driver of the pick-up truck was uninjured.

Speaking to Newry Times, Inspector Kieran Quinn said, “The 12 year old girl, who was a passenger on the buggy, died as a result of injuries she sustained.

“I am appealing to anyone who may have been in the Flagstaff Road area at the time and witnessed the collision to contact local officers in Newry or the Collision Investigation Unit on 101 quoting reference 772 18/11/17.”

Newry Mourne & Down councillor Liz Kimmins said the death of the young girl has left the community “reeling in deep shock”.

The Sinn Fein representative said, “The entire area had been left reeling in deep shock from the news of the death of a young girl.

“Our deepest sympathy to the family of the young girl who has lost her life in this tragedy.”

“We also hope that the other young girl injured makes a full recovery,” added the local Councillor.
