Fall of landfill waste levels welcomed

Newry and Mourne Council’s Landfill Site in MayobridgeSinn Féín MLA Cathal Boylan has welcomed news that the level of waste going to landfill over the past decade has now fallen to its lowest ever point.

Speaking to Newry Times, Boylan said, “I questioned the DAERA Minister regarding her plans to implement a zero-waste strategy and asked her to outline how the 50% recycling level target for 2020 would be met.

“I welcome the fact that the amount of waste going to landfill over the past decade has now fallen to its lowest ever level and that substantial increases have been made in recycling.

30th-nov-2016-small-boxHe added, “As councils are now obligated to improve the provision of food waste collection schemes to comply with the new regulations by April 2017, this is to be welcomed as it will significantly decrease the amount of waste that goes to landfill and will go towards assisting with reaching the targets.”
