‘Brokenshire living in cloud cuckoo land over Brexit’ – Murphy

Sinn Fein MP Conor MurphySinn Féin MLA Conor Murphy has said British Secretary of State James Brokenshire in ‘living in cloud cuckoo land’.

Conor Murphy was responding to a claim by the British Secretary of State that US investors could be tempted to set up in the North in order to access British markets alone.

Speaking to Newry Times, Murphy said, “James Brokenshire told the media that potential US investors can see the benefits of the North as a launching pad for ‘access to the UK market’.

“That’s all well and good but what about the other 27 nations in the European Single Market that his government is determined to cut us off from. Did he mention that on his flying visit to the States?

Brexit will be bad for foreign direct investment and James Brokenshire knows it. That’s why he campaigned for Remain in the referendum,” the local MLA insisted.

“It will be particularly damaging in our context where a huge part of our success in attracting record levels of US foreign direct investment over recent years has been our access to the European Union.

“It’s one of the main reasons why so many US companies in particular have come here and employ thousands of local people. They recognise that we have the talent and access to one of the biggest markets in the globe.

Murphy added, “James Brokenshire’s government, which has no mandate in the North, is attempting to cut us off from that market and no amount of spin or flying visits to the US will change the impact of such a disastrous decision.”
