‘Single Market membership essential for NI economy’ – Ritchie
SDLP South Down MP Margaret Ritchie has questioned the Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union on the impact withdrawal from the Single Market would have on jobs in Northern Ireland
Speaking to Newry Times, she said, “Membership of the Single Market is vital to Northern Irish exports and to our all-island economy.

“The continued hand-waving of fundamental economic issues shows that the Secretary of State David Davis does not understand the seriousness and inevitable difficulty of the forthcoming exit negotiations, and I remain concerned that the Government’s reckless insouciance presents a serious threat to Northern Ireland’s future economic stability.”

She added, “Given Northern Ireland’s majority in favour of remaining in the EU and our particular reliance on membership, the Government should avoid repeating the mistakes of the past and make clear from the outset that they will not seek to withdraw the North from the Single Market regardless of the outcome of their exit negotiations.”
