Letters to the Editor, ‘88% of under 18s lack confidence’
Dear Editor,
It is 150 years since Dublin-born Dr Thomas Barnardo founded the first ever children’s charity with the opening of a home for boys in the East End of London.
Today Barnardo’s is still working to provide safer childhoods, stronger families and positive futures.
In Northern Ireland we support over 8,000 children, young people and their families through a range of programmes and services. Although much work has been done there is still an urgent need to support children and young people as the challenges of a rapidly changing world make their lives more complex and dangers more hidden.
A recent poll carried out by Barnardo’s across the UK (including NI) revealed 88 per cent of under 18s lack confidence. Increasingly we are seeing that ‘youthful optimism’ no longer exists. This epidemic of low confidence and limited self-belief holds young people back from future success.

We want to empower children and young people to believe in themselves and the services and programmes we run locally aim to do just that. Barnardo’s has been supporting children and young people for 150 years and will continue to be here for as long as it takes.
