‘Law must do more to protect dogs from puppy farming’ – Ritchie

SDLP South Down MP Margaret Ritchie has met with PupAid to discuss puppy farming and has urged the Government to do more to close down cruel breeders operating in Britain and Northern Ireland.

Margaret RitchieSpeaking to Newry Times, she said, “Puppy farming is inherently cruel to both puppies and their mothers and must be brought to an end.

“Commercial breeding often sees puppies taken away from their mothers when they are too young by breeders who are more concerned about raising their own profits than raising the animals in their charge.”

“The EFRA Select Committee, of which I am a member, is currently undertaking an inquiry into pet welfare, and we will be making formal recommendations to the Government in due course.

May June 2016 updatedRitchie added, “I will do my part to ensure these recommendations include greater action to end puppy farming and the cruel separation of puppies and mothers at a young age.”
