‘No one seriously believes British would replace EU funding’ – Fearon
Sinn Féin MLA Megan Fearon has said that nobody seriously believes the British government would replace EU funding in the north in the event of an exit from Europe.
Speaking after an Institute of Directors report said that the British government is unlikely to replace EU funding in the North, Fearon said, “Over the last five years we have seen how eager George Osborne is to cut public spending in the north.
“Only a fool would believe he will replace European funding for agriculture, PEACE, and other funding streams should there be a decision to leave the EU.
“On an island the size of Ireland, which has been failed by partition, it makes no sense to take any steps to reinforce the border,” she insisted.
“Surveys show the vast majority of people here are against an exit from the EU.

Fearon added, “They recognise the benefits that businesses reap from European market. They see an exit from Europe will only lead to years of uncertainty and isolation.”
