Park & Ride facilities set for Slieve Gullion

Slieve Gullion is proving to be a must see visitor attraction for people right across Ireland and further afield.

gullion19To help meet visitor demand and maximise the opportunity for people to experience Slieve Gullion, Park & Ride facilities will be offered from the JADE Business Park in Jonesborough.

The service will run from 10am – 6pm every weekend from Easter to June and daily during July and August. The service cost is £1 per person return with children under 3 years travelling for free.

Visitors are encouraged to go directly to Junction 20 on the M1 motorway to access the Park & Ride facility.

Speaking about the service, Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Cllr Mickey Ruane commented, “The past five years have seen an investment of £1.4 million in the facilities at Slieve Gullion which has no doubt contributed to the 4 star rating for visitor attraction received from Tourism NI.”

Cllr Ruane continued, “The Council recognises the potential of Slieve Gullion has to be one of very few 5 star visitor attractions in the north of Ireland and has identified the need for continued investment, with funding in the excess of £400,000 planned to provide a new toilet block and provision for additional parking.

NT ads gif new“Combined with Council resources the Ring of Gullion Landscape Partnership are planning a range of projects which will see investment of £310,000 over the next 3 years that will continue to enhance the product offering at Slieve Gullion.

He continued, “In addition, Council do recognise the huge interest Slieve Gullion is for playgroup, school and youth groups and the important resource it can provide as part of the activities within the curriculum.

CountryFest gifsCllr Ruane added, “Slieve Gullion Forest Park is at the fore of Council’s corporate objective to become the premier outdoor tourism destination in Ireland. To help achieve this aim, this year for the first time ever, Council is planning a major event at Slieve Gullion which promises to bring Cú Chulainn to life.”
