76 fixed penalties issued by Newry police during week-long operation
During a focused week long road safety operation in Newry, Mourne and Down police issued 76 fixed penalty notices.
With dedicated teams providing visible road safety patrols over the last week, a number of motorists received advice and warnings, 12 were reported to the PPS, one person was arrested for vehicle theft, four people were arrested for drink driving offences and one vehicle was seized.
Speaking to Newry Times, Inspector Lynne Corbett said, “We have conducted operations across a wide spread of roads in Newry, Mourne and Down and it is disappointing to see that motorists are still taking risks with their own safety and that of other road users.
“Many of the roads we patrolled were highlighted by the public on our social media sites. We have issued fixed penalty notices for excess speed, using a mobile phone while driving, no insurance and not wearing a seatbelt.
“We work hard to educate road users about safety and laws around driving but the message still does not seem to be getting through.
She added, “Everyone has a responsibility to make our roads safe and I would ask all motorists to slow down, wear your seatbelt, refrain from using your mobile phone while driving and never, ever drink and drive.”
