Ruane welcomes £1.6m care home investment
Sinn Féin MLA Caitriona Ruane has welcomed an extra £1.6m that has been allocated towards bringing stability to the care home sector.
Speaking to Newry Times, Ruane said, “Over the past few years confidence in the sector has reached rock bottom as homes have faced the threat of closure, with residents not knowing from one day to the next what was happening.
“Several homes in the South Down area have also been under threat, putting pressures on the residents and their families.
“This money should be used to remove the uncertainty over closures of homes across the North including those in the South Down area by investing in staff and infrastructure.
She added, “It is important we invest this money wisely so as to create confidence within the industry. However, we need to look at further investment in our care services especially domiciliary care if we are to keep people out of hospitals and care for our ageing population.”
