Letters to Editor – ‘Appeal for foster carers’

Dear Editor,

In Northern Ireland latest figures show there are over 2000 children in care.

Letters to the EditorThat means, assuming an average class size is 25, there are enough children in care here to fill over 80 classrooms.

These children are some of the most vulnerable in Northern Ireland. Tragically, what they most need is the thing that many of us take for granted; a stable loving childhood, where they can just be themselves.

Foster carers don’t need to be super-heroes; they come from all walks of life but they can make a huge difference to these children’s lives. They are ordinary people doing something extraordinary: opening their hearts to help children feel secure and loved.

More foster carers are desperately needed to give these children loving and stable care. Barnardo’s celebrates its 150th anniversary this year. The charity was one of the first to place children with families, and to train foster carers so they had the right skills to look after children.

If you decide to take the life-changing decision to foster, Barnardo’s will support you every step of the way so you don’t have to do it alone.

If you’re interested in fostering with Barnardo’s please visit www.barnardos.org.uk/fostering, or call us on T: 028 9065 2288 (Monday to Friday.

Regards,

Lynda Wilson – Director Barnardo’s NI
