Rogers calls on Trust to ensure adequate Chiropody for diabetes patients
South Down SDLP MLA Seán Rogers has written to the Southern Trust seeking improvements to Trust Chiropody services.
Speaking to Newry Times, Rogers said, “One of my constituents is elderly and diabetic. Given the diabetes he requires regular chiropody appointments.
“Everyone who has diabetes should have their feet checked regularly with a healthcare professional and those with complications, these inspections should be done more frequently.
“My constituent has been waiting for a follow up appointment since June and has had to pay privately for Chiropody services due to the prolonged waiting times,” Rogers revealed.
“A very shocking fact is that if you have diabetes you are 15 times more likely to have a limb amputated due to gangrene. This figure is alarming but unfortunately true.
The local SDLP MLA added, “I have made representations to the Trust seeking the current position in terms of timescales and asked for the matter to be reviewed. It is deeply unfair that anyone, particular someone older, should have to experience such lengthy delays whilst at the same time limping due to discomfort.”
