The Association of Anaesthetists Conference is the largest of its kind in the UK and Ireland.

Dr Cochrane was shortlisted for her work in improving the Quality of Care in Anaesthesia. Dr Cochrane is based at Daisy Hill Hospital and has been working there in Anaesthesia for over two years.

The project, which was judged by an independent panel, aimed to help improve safety and quality of care for patients who need a medical device to keep their airways open during anaesthesia. She demonstrated a new, safer technique than was previously used and displayed the results on a simplified poster.

Congratulating Dr Cochrane on her recent award, Dr Charlie McAllister, Associate Medical Director for Anaesthetics, Theatres and Intensive Care Services at the Southern Trust said, “Anaesthetists form the largest single hospital medical specialty and their skills are crucial in many aspects of patient care, from preoperative preparation, sedation and resuscitation to intensive care medicine and pain relief.

“We are committed to supporting our anaesthetists and are keen to continually improve the skills of all of our clinicians to ensure that patients receive the best possible treatment.

“This recognition reflects the high calibre of anaesthetic staff we have in the Southern Trust but more importantly, Jill, supported by her mentors has developed a project which will improve safety and quality of patient care.”

Dr Peter Maguire, an Anaesthetist with the Southern Trust who has worked alongside Dr Cochrane at Daisy Hill added, “This is a fantastic achievement for Jill to be given this prestigious UK wide recognition.

He added, “Jill is hard working and dedicated to her patients. Her commitment to quality improvement brings cutting edge, audit and research to our local hospital and will only benefit the patients who are treated at Daisy Hill.”
