Free wildlife events in Crossmaglen

“What’s About in the Wild” is the name of a new programme of events and training being offered this autumn and winter by the Ring of Gullion Landscape Partnership, part funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Department of Social Development Areas at Risk programme.

bird1The next event in the programme, which will run from now to December, will be Garden Bird ID on 5th November from 7.30pm – 9.30pm at Crossmaglen Community Centre, O’Fiach Square.

The evening presentation will be led by local wildlife photographer Breffni Martin, who will be showing some of his stunning photography of the common birds that may be using your garden.

Breffni will also be demonstrating how to use simple bird guides to identify our feathered friends and simple on-line systems to record what you see on your bird table.

There will also be an opportunity to make and take home some simple bird feeders from recycled materials and bird cake that is half the price of commercial fat balls from the supermarket.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Naomi Bailie said, “As the weather gets cooler our gardens become a lifeline for wildlife, particularly if you can provide some extra food.

“Gardens are a valuable resource for biodiversity, making up to 23% of the land area in our towns, land that is often managed in a wildlife friendly manner. Knowing a little about the birds that visit our gardens and finding out some simple ways to help them is vital,” she added.
