U-turn on ‘disastrous decision’ welcomed

Sinn Fein Group Leader Terry Hearty has welcomed the return of almost £300,000 from the Rate Support Grant to Newry, Mourne and Down Council.

hearty1The money had initially been cut by SDLP Environment Minister Mark H Durkan but in a U-turn following pressure from councillors the Minister announced a return of a large part of the grant.

“I certainly welcome the return of this funding, which will provide invaluable support to hard pressed local businesses, but of course this money should never have been cut,” he said.

“At a time when local businesses are facing into an uncertain future it was absolutely reckless of the Minister to cut such vital funding.

Hearty added, “A delegation of councillors from right across the north were due to meet the Minister next month to discuss this issue and thankfully, after coming under pressure from local councils, he has come to his senses and reversed this disastrous decision.”
