Concerns raised over potential partners in Hinkley Nuclear site
SDLP South Down MP Margaret Ritchie has expressed her concern over the proposed inclusion of Chinese investors in the proposed nuclear power facility at Hinkley Point.
Her comments come after revelations that the potential investors have what she described as a ‘poor safety record and are closely linked to the Chinese Government’s industrial military complex’.
She said, “The Government has done nothing to allay the fears of the public over their misguided energy strategy. Their decision to press ahead with a strategy that is dependent on an energy source that is both unsafe and uneconomic is a matter of serious anxiety, not only for local residents but for people across these islands.
“For the Government to tie this highly risky strategy to investors with poor safety records and military links abroad is deeply concerning and is only the latest addition to a list of very serious problems with the development of this site.
Ritchie added, “The Government must step back from the brink of this monumentally misguided strategy and work to implement an energy strategy that promotes the use of clean renewable sources.”
