‘SDLP Childcare proposals can be transformative’ – Donnelly

SDLP South Armagh Councillor Geraldine Donnelly has said that party proposals for 30 hours basic free childcare allowance for working parents could have a transformative effect on the economy and help reshape the workforce.

donnellySpeaking to Newry Times, Donnelly said, “Childcare provision continues to be a huge issue in South Armagh.

“I’m often approached by hard working parents who want to stay in employment but are struggling to keep up with childcare costs which are often almost as expensive as a mortgage for many.

“The SDLP understands the choices parents face in finding quality, convenient childcare. Many parents are working to Wednesday or Thursday in a five day week just to cover their childcare bill. For many more, working isn’t financially viable except to retain skills and their foothold in the labour market.

“That’s why we’ve made proposals to increase the basic free childcare allowance to 30 hours per week. That could be transformative for local people, allowing women in particular to re-enter the workforce,” Donnelly added.
