Newry student Gavin Teggart wins Entrepreneurial Spirit Award

“Committed, enthusiastic and prepared to see his ideas through,” were just some of the words used to describe this year’s winner of the Entrepreneurial Spirit Award developed by the Ulster University Business School.

Ulster University Business School student, Gavin Teggart, from Newry, a former pupil of St Colman’s College, impressed the judges with his great tenacity and perseverance in working in areas he didn’t naturally enjoy to develop a detailed plan for his business.

In addition to gaining a BSc honours degree in Marketing, Gavin also created a new business focusing on marketing and promotions. Called “The Mercury Agency”, it offers establishments within the nightlife and entertainment sector a comprehensive consultancy service.

Gavin’s award includes a bursary to cover the entire cost of studying his Master’s in Business Development and Innovation. Through the NI Chamber partnership he will also take part in a mentoring programme which includes support from a Northern Ireland business for six months.

In accepting the Award, Gavin said that it would give him a great opportunity to pursue an entrepreneurial career in business and to realise his ambitions.

Professor Pauric McGowan, Chair of the judging panel said, “Gavin Teggart was the unanimous choice of the panel for the Spirit of Entrepreneurship for 2015 in a competition at the Ulster University Business School that attracted applications from a group of extremely strong candidates.

gavin1“In his interview he clearly demonstrated his deep understanding of and passion for entrepreneurial endeavour, outlining how he had, in his studies and in his work experience, challenged the status quo and handled setbacks in his career to date in a positive way.

“Gavin had a clear perspective on the potential of Northern Ireland as an entrepreneurial region and described to the judges how he saw that potential being of help to him in developing his entrepreneurial career in the future,” he added.

Congratulating Gavin, Sandra Scannell, Business Growth & Trade Director, Northern Ireland Chamber of Commerce and Industry said, “NI Chamber is delighted to be working in partnership with Ulster University in order to promote the vast array of business talent, entrepreneurial spirit and innovation that we have in Northern Ireland.

Sandra added, “Gavin displays all of the initial signs of an extremely successful entrepreneur by showing great vision, passion and determination whilst taking innovative social media ideas to Middle Eastern markets where they did not previously exist.”
