Murphy calls for better Newry train services
Sinn Féin MLA Conor Murphy has written to Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy about train services in Newry.
The Newry and Armagh MLA wrote to the Minister after being contacted by constituents who he says were unhappy with the service available.
He said the people of Newry and south Armagh deserved a service ‘on par with the rest of the north’.
“I have been contacted by constituents who have highlighted some facts around the timetable and services available to passengers from this area, and who feel they are being unfairly treated,” he explained to Newry Times.
“For example, passengers returning from Belfast to Newry can avail of the 18:20 service but failing to get this train the next available one after this is not until 21:15, some three hours later.
“I told the Minister that while I understand that services are dependent on demand, I would like to know if in recent times there have been any attempts by Translink to enhance this service.
Murphy added, “Surely the citizens of Newry and south Armagh deserve a train service that is on par with other parts of the north and following on from the huge investment in the Newry Train Station it makes sense to utilise this state of the art passenger hub.”
