Launch of North Street art project ‘Illumination’

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Naomi Bailie, launched the North Street Art Mural Project entitled “Illumination” recently.

The project was undertaken by the Magnet art group with support from the Newry and Mourne Youth Strategy Partnership and Newry, Mourne and Down District Councils Good Relations Unit.

Councillor Bailie, speaking to those in attendance said, “This project cannot be underestimated. It is something we should all be proud of.

“It is a tribute to how far we have come and it is an important step towards our shared future in Newry, Mourne and Down. It should inspire us all to make a positive difference with our neighbours, regardless of their ethnic origin, religious belief or political opinion.”

“It is also a tribute to the young people of our city who highlighted the need to address the racist graffitti in the area. Due to their dedication, enthusiasm and commitment, we are here today, not only celebrating this piece of art but challenging racism at a local level and embracing the cultural diversity of our District,” she added.

Laura McLennan, Magnet art group said, “The image of a Polish child holding a pisanka (an intricately decorated egg) and wearing traditionally inspired clothing, was the result of many weeks of work.

“It was produced by the young people of The Magnet Centre’s art group with the help from graffiti artist MWAK. The painted egg not only reflects a beautiful Eastern European tradition, now common the world over, but is also a symbol of how Newry benefits from the diverse cultures that live here.”
