‘European Conference on Politics and Gender a success’ – Ruane

Sinn Féin MLA Caitriona Ruane has said that she was delighted to be invited to take part in the 4th Annual European Conference on Politics and Gender held in Sweden.

Ruane said, “The 4th Annual European Conference on Politics and Gender was held in Uppsala Sweden between the 11th and 13th June and I was delighted to attend.

“There is a major imbalance between the percentage of women in society and the percentage that participate in politics. Across the island of Ireland the population contains around 52% women yet only around 18% are represented in political life and this needs to be addressed.

“The conference was an opportunity to hear from academics, social movements, politicians and governmental departments and to discuss how we can address the imbalance.

“While Sinn Féin has been progressive in promoting women in politics more can be done and I will use the lessons from this conference so that we can develop best practice that will benefit the party in achieving greater participation from women,” she added.
