SRC Newry student reaches Student Decorator of the Year final
Painting and decorating student, Jordan Jeffers, will be representing Southern Regional College, Newry Campus, for the third year running at the final of Dulux Decorator Centre Student Decorator of the Year competition.
The final, which will take place at Edinburgh College on 1st – 2nd July, sees Northern Irish regional heat winner Jordan compete against ten other finalists from different regional heats across the UK, in the race for the 2015 title.
Jordan successfully completed a practical work piece using skills honed from his painting and decorating course, including wallpapering, stencilling, waterborne glossing and special effects within a set time.
The heat saw Jordan pit his skills against nine other students at the host college, which was also held at Southern Regional College.
At the final, Jordan will have to complete another, more challenging practical assessment, to compete for the chance to be named Student Decorator of the Year 2015. Following the final, there will be a presentation evening in Edinburgh, where the winner and runners up will be announced.
Student Jordan, who is employed by local firm BMK Decorators, told Newry Times, “I’m really happy to have won the regional heat. It was challenging to complete the practical piece within the set time but I enjoyed every minute of it.
“I’m looking forward to competing in another final, this time in Edinburgh – the standard will be even higher and it’s a good opportunity to meet other painting and decorating students from across the UK.”
College lecturer Patrick Maguire also commented, “It’s a great achievement to come first in the regional heat – we’re all really proud of him at the college. The level of competition is high, so it’s testament to Jordan’s ability that he will be competing at the final of Student Decorator of the Year for the third year in a row.
“We always encourage our students to participate in events like this, because it’s a good opportunity to test their painting and decorating skills, as well as being a very professional and well-recognised competition within the industry.”
For winning the heat, Jordan collected £100 worth of Dulux Decorator Centre vouchers, received a certificate and a goody bag full of decorating materials donated by the company’s suppliers.
The final will see the ten regional heat winners and highest runner up competing for the coveted title 2015 Dulux Decorator Centre Student Decorator of the Year, where they will have the chance to win £1,000 cash and a variety of other prizes donated by suppliers, as well as a host of prizes for their college for all painting and decorating students to use.
