Newry butchers is home to Ulster’s Premium Ribeye

Many of Ulster’s finest butchers went head-to-head recently in the first-ever Ulster BBQ Championship, organised by butchery members’ association, the Butchery Excellence Scheme.

baird1The competition saw local butcher William Baird from Baird’s Butchers walk away with the title of best ‘BBQ Premium Ribeye’ in Ulster, as well as a commendation for their ‘BBQ Premium Sirloin’.

Open to all independent butchers across the Province, the competition reinforces the quality of the BBQ produce provided by butchers here in Ulster, just ahead of the important BBQ summer season.

For Baird’s Butchers, receiving the award will give their shop and their BBQ products – especially their now award-winning ribeye steaks- extra kudos with customers.

The win will hopefully attract new custom to their store and for current customers, they can be confident that they’re purchasing the premium ribeye in Ulster for their summer BBQs.

An expert judging panel oversaw proceedings, including accredited cookery judge Dolan Heaney, award-winning chef, Pauline McGurk; and Chief Judge, Chef Sean Owens.

William Baird of Baird’s Butchers in Newry, winner of the ‘Premium Ribeye’ title said, “Ribeye steaks are a staple BBQ favourite, and to be named as having the best ribeye steak in Ulster is incredible!

“With BBQing becoming increasingly popular in NI, and not just during the summer months, we’ve put a lot of effort into our BBQ produce range. We’ve even found that for many of customers, they BBQ all year round so this win will be invaluable to our business moving forward.”

Rhonda Montgomery, Chief Executive of Montgomery Food Consulting and Founder of the Butchery Excellence Scheme said, “We have had an amazing response to our first Ulster BBQ Championship competition, with well over 150 entries being received.

“The calibre of the entries has been exceptional and the judges had a tough decision to make in all of the categories. We would like to congratulate Baird’s Butchers on their barbecuing skills and on having the ‘Premium Ribeye’ in Ulster.”
